The Sustainable Longfellow Gardens

Across from Minnehaha Falls you’ll discover the sustainable Longfellow Gardens. In 2005, the city of Minneapolis decided it was time to create another place for the bees to pollinate and leaves to compost.

History of the Sustainable Longfellow Gardens

Not only is it sustainable gardens in the city, it is also an oasis of Minneapolis history. In the early 1900s this spot was the home of the Longfellow Zoological Gardens. They had an amusement park where thousands would come to visit. It was the home of tigers, bears, and even free roaming flamingos for almost 30 years.

When to Visit

If you find yourself in the Longfellow neighborhood May through October take the opportunity to pop in for a quick visit to gardens.

The master gardeners have chosen the most beautiful perennials. The annuals change according to the weather encouraging healthy vegetation in the ever changing Minnesota seasons.

Parking

There is a small parking lot right out front to take a quick look around. Otherwise, we like to find a parking spot in the neighborhood close by. It is more of a walk, but then you can explore without a time frame or paying for a meter. The Park Mobile App is awesome if you do want to make it simple by parking in a pay lot.

The Sustainable Longfellow Gardens August 2019

This is my favorite month to visit the gardens. Everything is established and in full bloom. I enjoy having my mom by my side to tell me what each flower is.

June 2020 in the Sustainable Longfellow Gardens

My mom and I made a quick stop to enjoy the flowers together on our journey to visit all of the gardens in Minneapolis in one day. It was fabulous spending time together doing something we both love.
